Susan Laswell has been perfecting her art form since she was a child in Springfield, Illinois. Laswell is self-taught and began her art career making traditional, functional baskets.
However, her true love is using traditional techniques to created unique sculptural pieces. She has discovered that anything that is long and flexible can be woven into a basket.
In addition to her art, Laswell grows a large garden, tends a flock of hens, teaches basket weaving, vends at the Carrboro Farmer’s Market and has worked in the business sector since graduating from Kansas State University with a degree in computer science.
Her proudest accomplishment is raising and homeschooling her three marvelous children, who continue to be an integral part of her life.
